Save The Date!

Dear families,

Mark your calendars! The fun and excitement of a Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school! To adapt to our changing needs, Scholastic has developed a Hybrid Book Fair (in-school with a virtual link) to provide an opportunity for our students and families to experience the joy of reading together.

So, save the date! Our Scholastic Virtual Book Fair will take place on:

Friday, March 4th – Friday, March 11th

When it’s time to shop, you can choose to visit the virtual link and purchase online or send in cash for your child to purchase books in person. We will be sending home a letter with more information soon!

Happy reading!

FITNESS BINGO AT LBS!

All of the classes at Lake Bonavista School are participating in a fitness bingo challenge from February 23-April 8! We wanted to share the bingo card with you so you can continue the fun at home! At school, each time a class completes a ‘blackout’ bingo card, they will be added to a draw and entered to win bonus recess time! If your family complete all of the exercises on a bingo card at your house, please notify your classroom teacher and your child’s class will receive an additional entry in the draw.

Each exercise on the bingo card is to be completed in an interval style - 20 seconds of the exercise, followed by 10 seconds of rest. In order to cross the activity off of your bingo card you must complete a minimum of 4 interval sets. If some of the exercises are unfamiliar, please ask your child to teach you the movement.

Feel free to check out the video below for a further explanation of the bingo challenge.

Happy Family Day!

Although short, last week was full of kindness! Students worked on a parallel Line Art task for Valentine's Day. Students looked at their pumpkin line art and participated in a self feedback cycle by self assessing their past work and setting a goal for their heart line art. Our work was much more organized, controlled, spaced and there was an improvement in our colouring.

After reading a few different books around spreading kindness, students collectively brainstormed a variety of Acts of Kindness that they can do. They are tucked here in their sketchbooks, and encouraged to randomly choose one act of kindness at the beginning of each day and challenge themselves to complete this act by the end of the day!

 Hi Families,

Students worked creatively to publish a sensory poem. We continued our work in descriptive writing in order to add interest and paint a vivid picture for the reader.

This week we focused on using a number line to add double digit (grade 2) and triple digit (grade 3) numbers based on place value and benchmark numbers. Next week we will explore subtraction strategies through the use of an open number line.

Enjoy our co created documentation board depicting the many interconnections found in the Arctic Food Web. Ask your child what the difference is between a food chain and a food web. Also ask what an Apex Predator means!

In our second session of Coding with Ms. Thomas, students took the role of either teacher or learner in their partner groups, to support each other with building and reviewing foundational knowledge from our first session. We reviewed safety expectations, as well as basic navigation of the Dash robots and the Blocky program, before jumping into some Task Card work.

With our Task Cards, we introduced some new ideas:

  • Building code that fits a task description

  • Using a “Repeat” block to build efficient code

  • Debugging our work (instead of blaming our poor Dash bots 🙁)

Ask your child about the different tasks they were able to code their robot for.

We look forward to our next session at the end of February.

Valentine's Day - due to protocols and restrictions we ask that you do not send in any treats or Valentines in this year. We will be celebrating Valentine's Day with some in class activities throughout the day
