A farewell message

Today I am sharing with the Lake Bonavista Parent Community that I have accepted a Learning Leader position at Bayside School, the new Auburn Bay School beginning in September 2022.

It is a bitter sweet farewell to the Lake Bonavista School Community, my home sweet home since 2011. I am so grateful for the opportunity to develop my passion for teaching and love for the Montessori philosophy at LBS. Our close-knit community is one of a kind, full of kindness and support. I have been honoured to work with you all as I have witnessed your children grow into future leaders, scientists, conservationists, artists, writers and the list goes on!

It wouldn’t be me if I didn’t leave you all with a quote. “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” – A.A. Milne

A classroom full of entomologists!

Entomology is the study of insects and their relationship to humans, the environment, and other organisms.

After participating in City of Calgary Mayors Expo presentation "Bee Friendly", students delved into an inquiry to learn about bee life cycle, how they are helpful and harmful in our environment, bee anatomy and what actions each of us can take to support bees and bee habitats.  We were so fortunate to have special guests from Mrs. Melindy's Grade 1 classroom. They shared their bee houses, and taught us more about solitary bees.

Did you know that there are many ways to help our native bees and honey bees thrive in our community!

1. Create habitat in your own back yard to help to feed pollinators and provide homes for native bees.

Check out some resources from Bee City Canada that will help you design a pollinator garden that bees will love!

Alberta Native Plant Council Native Plant List

2. Provide homes for solitary bees by clearing away mulch in spots in your plant/flower beds so bees can burrow into the soil. Learn how to build a DIY bee bath or bee hotel using bamboo and compost!

3. Want a project that includes the kids? Here is a video on how to Build a Beehouse for younger children.

It has been an amazing few weeks of learning and deep inquiry in our classroom. Students have been acting as entomologists to observe the lifecycle of a Painted Lady Butterfly. Students did not know the species until it was revealed yesterday. They used deductive reasoning skills throughout its metamorphosis to come to the conclusion. This included making comparisons to different species of caterpillars and making comparisons to the cocoons of a moth and the chrysalis of a butterfly.

Our caterpillars crawling all over Mrs. Morden's teacher table.

The chrysalis. Ask your child what changes go on inside the chrysalis- nature is fascinating!

Students making comparisons and justifying their predictions using provided scientific resources.

The Painted Lady Butterflies were released today in the LBS school garden, they loved the lilac bushes!

On Monday we watched Calgary Public Library presentation: Watched Napi’s and the Wolves puppet show. Students are invited to sign up for the CPL's Ultimate Summer Challenge to encourage reading throughout the summer!

Next week we will continue our learning around the Indigenous Ways of Knowing in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day through storytelling, learning about plants and medicines, and spending time connecting to the land through sit spot and walk alongsides. We will be going on a Walking Field Trip June 21st.

We know that all students have embraced the study of entomology as evident when we go outside for physical education and outdoor learning time students are actively noticing small crawling and flying animals in their environment.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello Parents,

Our classroom has been busy with building materials once again. The student have been applying the design process as they design a blueprint, build a prototype, test it, make observations, then receive feedback from others in order to make improvements to the prototype before testing it again. The grade 2 students have been applying the design process to building a boat that is stable, waterproof, buoyant and can carry a load. Grade 3 students have been applying their knowledge and skills to building bridges based on a scenario and determining what type of bridge would be best suited.

Did you know that your child has been provided with an important task? Earlier this week they were each given a small larvae to care for. After listening to the diary of a bug series, students determined some of the success criteria in these stories in order to make their own diary of a larvae.

In math grade 2 students have been learning about measuring length to the nearest non-standard unit of 2 dimensional shapes. Students have concluded that the orientation of the object does not alter the measurements. They have been comparing and contrasting 2 dimensional shapes according to a variety of attributes such as number of sides or vertices or straight lines to curved lines.

The grade 3 students have been learning about fractions by firstly understanding that a fraction is a number that describes an equal part of a whole. They have been learning about fraction vocabulary such as: numerator, denominator, fraction bar, halves, sixths, quarters, etc.

We used the math thinking routine Which One Doesn't Belong to explore 2 dimensional shapes this week. Students communicated their reasoning using mathematical vocabulary.

Have a fantastic weekend,

In the Spirit of the NHL Playoffs, LBS is going to have Jersey Day next Wednesday, May 11th when the Flames have their next home game. Go Flames Go! (or whichever team you cheer for!)

In continuing our exploration of self identity, students found ways to celebrate their name story, outside them, inside them, and interests and talents. Several mentor texts supported this work...

The Conservation Champions Festival on Wednesday was an amazing experience for everyone. Teachers, Parents, Zoo Employees, and the general public were all impressed by the wealth of knowledge that the students shared when speaking on the story of the polar bears. In a reflection today, students shared what a Conservation Champion is and does. "A Conservation Champion will spread the message." " A Conservation Champion cares for animals. A Conservation Champion is willing to share information about animals."

Last Friday, students continued their robotics work with Ms. Thomas. With robotics and computational thinking, students developed an understanding of estimation and measurement of length (distance)

Defining the difference between non-standard and standard units of measurement, students shared that using standard units makes it easy for everyone to understand the same measurement. They also recognized that we don’t always carry around tools for standard measurement, so developing accurate estimation skills is important.

Students used a meter stick to first calibrate what 10 centimeters looked like with their fingers or hands. They then used their calibration to estimate the length of various line segments, working alongside a partner to repeat the 10cm over and over. Their estimates were recorded to check for accuracy next time, using the Dash robots.

Have a wonderful weekend & Happy Mothers Day!

Gymnastics

 Gymnastics

We will begin gymnastics in our regularly scheduled gym classes on Monday, April 25th.  The gymnastics unit will last two weeks.  Safety routines, cooperation and sportsmanship are taught and reviewed in each class.

This physical activity opportunity will help students acquire individual skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities.

It is important for students to come to school prepared for being actively engaged. The following guidelines are very helpful…

HEAD TO TOE - READY TO GO!!!

Head ....................... long hair pulled back

Ears/Throat/Wrist ............... jewellery off

Shirt.................................. one layer shirt

Waist ................................................tucked in

Pants.........................sporty pants or shorts, no belts or zippers

Ankles..........................pants rolled up if ankles are covered

Toes...............running shoes, gymnastic slippers or bare feet (no footed tights)

“Playing & moving safely is everyone’s responsibility”

Today was a day full of rich math discussion. We took up our morning math warm up, Which One Doesn't Belong Patterning. This math thinking routine reinforced student understanding of increasing and decreasing patterns. We discussed patterns that double, and many students brought in the vocabulary of even and odd after using numbers to describe each pattern.

We also took up Pattern Detective, and co created a success criteria checklist that students then referred to when completing a parallel pattern detective task.

Grade 2 students built foundational knowledge of the different types of boats when completing their "East Coast Boats" booklets.

Grade 3 students began considering the question "What type of structure would you build on a river?"

Have a wonderful weekend, enjoy the outdoors. Remember: Every day is Earth day!
